Skipper's Plan
Objective
On completion of this program you will be able to cruise safely as both skipper and crew of a sailing yacht of 8 - 12 meters in moderate wind and sea conditions by day. The program takes you from absolute beginner to coastal skipper level in one season and focuses on the on-the-water skills at the level required for bare boat chartering.
On successfully completing the practical sessions and the theoretical exams you will be awarded the following internationally recognized certificates:
Basic Cruising Standard
Coast Guard Pleasure Craft Operator Card PCOC)
Marine Radio Operator's Certificate
Coastal Navigation Standard.
Intermediate Cruising Standard

what is included in the course fee:
Basic Cruising
This can be taken in any of the available formats but the recommended method is two separate weekends or 5 consecutive days. As soon as you register for the program the course material will be sent to you so you can start studying immediately.
Coast Guard Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)
Since Sept 2009 every boater is required to have this card. The course material will be available to you on registration and the short exam taken at your convenience.
Coastal Navigation
The material will be sent to you on registration. Coaching and practical application will be given during the experience building sessions. You may elect to take this course prior to starting Basic Cruising. You also have the option of attending a class in the fall if home study is not your preferred method of learning.
Radio Operator Permit
Although this is not formally required it is recommended that you complete it as early as possible. The material will be given to you on registration. Again coaching and practical application will be given during the experience building sessions.
Seasonal Boat Use Package
Once you have graduated from Basic Cruising you will be allowed use of our practice boats for the balance of the season. You will be given priority reservation rights.
Experience Building Sessions
Ten days sailing experience as a skipper are recommended as a pre-requisite to CYA Intermediate cruising. When you register we will identify mutually convenient dates for you to gather the necessary experience. Some of these sessions will be sailing on your own and some with an experienced skipper. Flexibility is built into the program so you can have individual day sails, weekends, or multi-day cruises. Whatever will work for you. Subject to space availablity you will be offered opportunities to spend time cruising on board in the 1000 Islands.
Intermediate Cruising
This can be taken as two separate weekends or 5 consecutive days (recommended format).
All Inclusive Price
The price of this program is all-inclusive. Everything (with the exception of alcoholic beverages and meals ashore) is included from the minute you arrive on the boat until you leave. All course material, instruction, private coaching, exam fees, certification fees, logbook, all included.
