Coastal Navigation

Coastal NavigationCruising in familiar local waters requires skills in a form of navigation known as conning. This could be termed "eyeball & seat of the pants navigation" as most decisions are made with respect to local knowledge with minimal reference to charts etc. It relies on lots of experience and extensive local knowledge.

Sailing ChartAs soon as you intend to venture a little further away from familiar home waters a more involved set of navigation skills known as piloting, or coastal navigation, becomes appropriate. In addition to giving you those skills this course is a good basis for the more involved navigation skills required for multi-day voyages and extensive offshore cruising.

Classroom or Home study - the choice is yours!

As this is a classroom based course we tend to run it only during the winter months. We will organize a course at other times if there is enough demand. There is lots of hands-on examples and graduates are encouraged to sign up for some on-the-water coaching during the season.

For the home study format you get all the same material and coaching you just do not attend the classroom sessions. It is recommended that you take no more than three months but it is up to you to decide. Take as much time as you need to complete the course at your own pace.

Course price includes all tuition, email and telephone coaching plus:

  • Chart #1
  • Practice Chart IC9997
  • Text Book
  • Dividers
