Experience Building Program
This objective of this program is to provide an affordable way for non boat owners to gain valuable experience after having compeleted a sailing course. Your course taught you how to sail. Experience will make you a sailor.
Registered members click Boat Reservation to reserve a boat.
This programme is available to all Ynot Sailing graduates. Graduates from other sailing schools may apply and will be accepted into the program on successful completion of an evaluation process.
Introduction
There are two ways to participate in this program; either as a skipper or a crew member. Only qualified skippers may rent boats. Crew members may sail with any qualified skipper.
Our skipper packages give you all the benefits of being a boat owner with none of the hassles or expenses. This is a great way to build confidence and competence without any large capital outlay.
The primary objective of this program is to provide an economical means for Ynot Sailing clients to practice sailing, improve their boat handling skills and gain valuable experience.
Graduates from other sailing schools and experienced sailors are also welcome but will need to be pre-qualified (see below).
The sailing season in Montreal starts the first Saturday in May and ends the last Saturday in October. Allowing a few days for early season set up and end of season lay up it can be broken down to reveal the following sailing opportunities:
112 Weekdays and evenings
24 Saturdays
24 Sundays
5 Months
We have packages to suit all needs and schedules.
Ynot Sailing Graduates
All Ynot Sailing Basic Cruising graduates will automatically be accepted into the program in the season in which they graduate. This applies to the boat they trained on and the location in which they took their course. To rent in any other location they would simply need to complete a short boat and area familiarisation session.
Graduates from earlier seasons who have maintained their competence level will also be automatically qualified. Graduates from previous seasons who have not regularly sailed since graduating should sign up for refresher / evaluation sessions.
Other Sailing Skippers
Graduates from other sailing schools and/or experienced sailors with equivalent experience will need to prove their competence. They will be required to satisfactorily complete an interview on safe operation of a vessel and sailing theory, plus an on-the-water evaluation.
Crew Requirements
Most activities in life are better if shared. Sailing is no exception. For your safety and enjoyment we require that the boat have a qualified skipper and at least one crew member on board at all times unless you have taken additional training (see next paragraph). You may select crew members from the Ynot Sailing qualified crew list.
Single Handed Sailing
If you wish to sail single handed we can provide additional training and show you how to safely solo sail . Typically this only requires one or two private coaching sessions after completion of your basic course.
Participant List
All participants in this program, skippers and crew, will be included in an on-line password protected list unless they indicate otherwise.
Contact info will made available for skippers seeking crew and crew seeking skippers.
All Ynot Sailing graduates automatically qualify for inclusion in the list as crew members. Other applications will be considered based on training and experience.
Skippers are encouraged to give as many sailing opportunities as possible to crew members. Skippers who accumulate at least ten crew usages will receive a 10% reduction in the following years program.
Guests
Only seasonal package skippers may invite guests to join them while sailing. There must never be more than a total of four people on the boat and the guests must be given a safety briefing by the skipper. There is a guest fee of $50 per person. Registered crew members are not considered guests.
Boats
In the Montreal area we have boats available in Baie d'Urfé and Pointe Claire. The boats in Baie d'Urfé are available for use whenever they are not being used for training courses. The boat in Pointe Claire is dedicated to this program.
Safety Equipment
All mandatory safety equipment will be provided with the boat. The skipper must check that all the required safety equipment is on board and that all the crew know the location of each item and how to use it. Should the boat be taken without all the equipment on board it is the skipper who will be responsible for paying any fines or penalties imposed by the authorities.
PFD's must be worn by all on board whenever the boat is not tied to a dock. It is the skipper's responsibility to ensure the crew and boat are safe at all times. Therefore any infraction will result in the skipper forfeiting the damage deposit and the immediate exclusion of the offender from the program without refund.
Memberships
There is an annual entry fee of $150 per person. This is the only fee a crew member pays.
In addition BDYC membership is required for skippers renting boats in Baie d'Urfé. Ynot Sailing students and graduates are automatically members in the year of their course. All others should apply to the BDYC membership secretary. BDYC membership is not required to rent in our Pointe Claire location.
Refund Policy
If the conditions are unsuitable at the time of the reservation the renter will have the option of receiving a refund less 15% administration fee OR reserving for another time without further cost. Unsuitable conditions are defined as sustained winds of greater than 20 knots. Rain, cool temperatures and/or lack of sunshine will not qualify as conditions for a refund or alternative reservation.
